Deliberations Continue in 1974 Slaying Trial

OTTUMWA, Iowa (AP) — After a second full day of deliberations, jurors have not reached a verdict at the trial of an Iowa man charged in the 1974 slaying of a 17-year-old girl.

Wapello County jurors left Monday afternoon after meeting all day to consider the case against Robert "Gene" Pilcher, who is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Mary Jayne Jones. Deliberations will resume Tuesday.

Pilcher maintains his innocence in the death of Jones, who was found beaten and shot to death at a rural farmhouse near Ottumwa.

Prosecutors say Pilcher is tied to the crime through his DNA profile, which matched semen left on a blanket on which Jones' body was found.

Pilcher's defense lawyers say the DNA came from another sexual encounter in that bed with another woman.
