Davenport School Board Dropping Management Firm

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — The Davenport school board has decided not to renew its contract with a private company that operates Jefferson-Edison Elementary School.

The contract with EdisonLearning ends June 30. The company has run the school since 1999. Staff members are considered district employees, but EdisonLearning oversees management, curriculum, technology and professional development.

Superintendent Arthur Tate said at Monday night's meeting that not renewing the contract could save the district up to $700,000.

Board member Bill Sherwood says some of the savings should go back into the school. He says the district must "make sure that the level of support for that very high-poverty school is greater than our average school."
