Davenport Man Sentenced for Woman's Death
DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) - A Davenport man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for a shooting last year that left one of his friends dead.
The Quad-City Times reports that 23-year-old Albert Coats III was sentenced Thursday for convictions of involuntary manslaughter, being a prohibited person with a gun and misdemeanor burglary.
Police say Coats and three of his friends were visiting 25-year-old Amanda Abbott at her Davenport home last June when Coats pulled out a gun he had stolen from a car. Police say he was handling the gun when it fired, hitting Abbott in the head.
Prosecutors say Coats fled, tossing the gun in a neighbor's yard. Family members say Abbott's 5-year-old daughter was in the home at the time of the shooting and found her mother dead.
