IOWA CITY, Iowa - Kids, parents, and student dancers have packed the Iowa Memorial Union for Dance Marathon 17′s Big Event. The 24-hour event kicked off at 6:30 p.m. Friday and will go through the night and all day until 6:30 p.m. on Saturday.

All year, Dance Marathon volunteers raise money for pediatric cancer patients and their families. In the last 16 years, the event has raised more than $8 million. Each of the hundreds of University of Iowa students who participate in the event have to raise at least $400.

Dancers, patients, and parents say the Big Event is fun, but they also appreciate the dancers coming in throughout the year to spend time with the kids.
