GRINNELL, Iowa -- An overnight fire at a farm implements dealer caused small explosions and left more than half a million dollars in damage.

The fire started early Friday morning at the Grinnell Implements Store at 1833 Sixth Avenue. Firefighters say the fire started in a storage shed, igniting several oil cans and sending flames shooting into the sky.

"We had a lot of 55 gallon drums exploding into the air, we had a significant amount of oil we had to keep from running off into the sewer system and keeping it on the property," said Grinnell Fire Chief Dan Sicard. "So not only the fire but we had to deal with a Haz-mat situation at the same time."

Most of the damage came in the back of the property to farm equipment. The fire burned out several tractors and combines, which added pushed the damage total so high.

The store was not open when the fire started and no one was hurt. Firefighters are still looking for a cause.
