Cyclones a 3-seed, Hawkeyes in a Play-in Game

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- The Iowa State Cyclones and Iowa Hawkeyes are both playing in the NCAA Tournament but not in the same capacity.

The Iowa State Cyclones, winners of the Big 12 Championship, garnered a 3-seed and will play North Carolina Central in San Antonio on Friday. Iowa State secured the high seed with a run to capture the Big 12 title that included wins over Kansas and Baylor. This is the third year in a row the Cyclones have made the NCAA tournament. Last year, the Cyclones lost to Ohio State in the second round.

The Iowa Hawkeyes will have to play an extra game to get in the field of 64. The Hawkeyes will play Tennessee in a first round game in Dayton. The winner will be an 11-seed and then travel to Charlotte to play 6-seed UMass on Friday. Iowa got off to a strong start this season but stumbled down the stretch, including a disappointing loss to Northwestern in the Big Ten tournament. It's the first time since 2006 that the Hawkeyes have made it to the NCAA tournament.
