Crash Puts Car Up Tree, Sends One to Hospital

HIAWATHA, Iowa - One man was taken to the hospital after a wreck Wednesday morning, authorities said.

Officials responded to a single-vehicle crash in the 1200 block of Miller Road near Fareway around 10:30 a.m. Police say the driver was traveling westbound when he began coughing uncontrollably, lost control and hit a tree. The vehicle went airborne and landed on its side in the backyard of 2380 Grey Wolf, which faces Miller Road, officials said.

Hiawatha firefighters used a circular saw to remove the top of the vehicle to safely get the driver out, officials said. Hiawatha police officer Chuck Allaire said the man was transported to a hospital for precautionary measures.

The driver was the only occupant of the vehicle and no one else was injured, authorities said.
