Cornell Freshman One of Two People Killed in Highway 1 Crash
JOHNSON COUNTY, Iowa - One Cornell College student was killed, and another injured, following a car crash on Highway 1 south of Mount Vernon just before 9 p.m. Saturday evening.
A report from the Iowa State Patrol said the sole-occupant of a Buick Lucerne, 68-year-old Wilbur Bigler, lost control of his car and crossed the centerline, where it was broadsided by a Buick Rendezvous, with five people in it, on it's passenger side. Bigler, of West Union Iowa, was killed in the accident.
A Sunday morning press release from Cornell College said said that Madison "Addie" Hubert, a first year student from Evergreen Colorado, was also killed in the accident, and another Cornell student, now being identified as 20-year-old Colin Bertucci, was being treated for injuries at a hospital in Iowa City.
The report from the Iowa State Patrol said Hubert and Bigler were pronounced dead at the scene. Sherri Ann Bertucci, 44, Camden Bertucci, 16, and Jeffrey Bertucci, 46, all of Mich., were taken to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics by ambulance with injuries.
Colin Bertucci, 20, was taken to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics by Air Care.
The school held a gathering at 3:15 p.m. Sunday afternoon in Allee Chapel following the incident, and is offering support to students and staff through it's counseling center, chaplain, and dean of students.
"We are deeply saddened at the loss of our student," said President Jonathan Brand in the release. "Cornell is a close community and everyone is affected."
The crash remains under investigation.
