EVANSDALE, Iowa --- Construction on a path linking the island at Meyers Lake to the rest of the park could start as early as this week, according to Evansdale parks officials.

The city's park board on Saturday approved the first phase of a memorial to the abducted cousins at Meyers Lake, which will be renamed Angels Park in their honor.

"I think it will be a fantastic project for the community," member Steve Seible said following the vote.

Lyric Cook-Morrissey, 10, of Waterloo, and Elizabeth Collins, 8, of Evansdale, whose mothers are sisters, disappeared in July, and their bikes were founds near the back side of the trail. Their bodies were discovered in rural Bremer County in December.

Saturday's vote covered the construction of a pedestrian trail connecting the small island to the shore. According to plans, it will consist of a causeway with two culverts to allow the lake water to circulate, said Park Board President Jeff Dawson.

The path will connect with the rest of the bike trial that almost circles the lake. It will start at the shore about where the existing retaining wall ends, not far from where the Sherman tank sits.

The motion also approved clearing undergrowth from the island to allow for better visibility.

Additional plans, which include erecting a gazebo on the island, would require further approval.

The cost of the memorial and improvements will be paid for with donations, park officials said.
