Add New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie to the growing list of high-profile Republicans heading to Iowa.
Christie, one of the GOP's most sought after stars after winning election last year in a blue state, will be in West Des Moines Oct. 4 to campaign for Gov. Terry Branstad. After 12 years out of office, Branstad is challenging first-term Democratic Gov. Chet Culver.
A Politico report that Christie will campaign in Iowa follows an announcement Tuesday that former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who is seen as a likely contender for the 2012 GOP presidential nomination, will campaign Oct. 26 for Branstad and GOP candidates. The former Massachusetts governor endorsed Branstad before the former Iowa governor won the June 8 primary – a major step in a comeback effort to reclaim the job he held for four terms from 1983 to 1999.
Albrecht said Christie will headline a Branstad fundraiser at 6 p.m. Oct. 4 at the Hy-Vee Conference Center in West Des Moines. The Scott County Republican Party said Romney will headline its Ronald Reagan fundraising dinner next month.
In addition to Christie and Romney, other possible 2012 GOP presidential candidates headed to Iowa include former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich later this week and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin Sept. 17 for a Republican Party of Iowa fundraiser.
Although a visit to Iowa, which hosts the first-in-the-nation presidential precinct caucuses, is sure to fuel speculation that Christie is planning a '12 challenge to President Barack Obama, Christie emphatically denied the rumor.
