According to the Tama County Sheriff's Office, 52-year-old Daryl L. White was driving westbound on 400th Street at 1:52 a.m. when he lost control of the vehicle. Police said White's vehicle entered a ditch, cartwheeled and was airborne on two occasions before coming to rest on the driver's side.
The passenger of the vehicle, 30-year-old Brandon Dvorak, of Toledo, was able to escape the vehicle. He suffered a broken nose, police said. White died before first responders made it to the scene.
Dvorak told officers he and White were drunk at the time of the crash and neither man was wearing a seat belt. Dvorak also reported they were driving at least 70 mph on the ice and snow-covered gravel road.
