IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The City Council Tuesday night held the final vote needed to rewrite taxicab regulations in Iowa City.

Rates will have to be based on time and distance, although destination rates – like charging a certain amount per person to go to Kinnick Stadium – will be allowed but must be posted on a rate card in a vehicle.

Cabs will be required to have meters and companies must operate at least four vehicles. Other changes include requiring companies to handle dispatching from an office and to keep at least one vehicle in service 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Most of the changes will take effect March 1. Rates based on time and distance will start later this month.
