Cedar Rapids Senior Recognized for Volunteer Work

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - A 90-year-old Cedar Rapids woman was honored today for her outstanding community service efforts. Dorothy Nemecek was chosen as Iowa's 2014 Outstanding Senior Volunteer.

The honor is part of the Salute to Senior Service program. Dozens of people gathered at the VFW Post 788 in Cedar Rapids to help Dorothy celebrate. She has volunteered with the post as well as her church.
People there said Dorothy is an outstanding example of a person.

"It's my way of doing things. Otherwise I'd be at home sitting on the couch," Nemecek said.

In honor of Dorothy's contributions, Home Instead Senior Care donated $500 to the post. She will also be featured on the Salute to Senior Service Wall of Fame.
