IOWA CITY, Iowa -- A Cedar Rapids man who investigators say admitted to shooting several horses last year near Swisher has pled guilty to livestock abuse and reckless use of a firearm, prosecutors said Tuesday.

Ryan Grafft was arrested last January after investigators said he went for a weekend car ride and fired upon several horses grazing in a Johnson County field for no apparent reason. One horse was killed in the incident, two others were wounded.

A sentencing date has not yet been entered. Grafft faces a maximum of four years in prison for two counts. Assistant Johnson County attorney Anne Lahey said prosecutors will ask for jail time in the case.

As part of a plea deal, two other charges in the case were dismissed.

As a captain in the Iowa National Guard, Grafft spent two years in Iraq in active combat.
