Cedar Rapids Man Faces Charges in Freeway Standoff
BEVINGTON, Iowa (AP) - A Cedar Rapids man faces several charges in connection to a brief standoff with authorities on a freeway.
19-year-old Albert Austin III faces multiple charges related to the Tuesday afternoon incident, including operating while intoxicated, reckless driving and attempting to elude. Court records do not list an attorney.
The Iowa State Patrol says Austin led authorities on a high-speed chase that began near Des Moines. Stop sticks deflated his tires and he pulled over on the shoulder of Interstate 35 near the exit for Bevington, about 25 miles south.
Austin is accused of showing a weapon during the standoff, which lasted more than an hour. He never used it and eventually surrendered. No injuries were reported.
The incident temporarily rerouted traffic for several miles.
