Cedar Rapids Man Dies After Downtown Assault
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Police confirm a 32-year-old Cedar Rapids man, found unconscious in a downtown street early Thursday morning, has died.
Investigators said Justin Carey, 32, was involved in a fight at Red's Public House on Second St. SE early Thursday and, by the time police arrived on the scene, they found him unconscious in the street.
Sgt. Cristy Hamblin on Friday said the assault is still under investigation, but investigators have identified a suspect.
“They’ve got a good handle on the whole investigation,” she said. “I know there was a disagreement between him and someone else and it turned physical,” Hamblin said.
Police arrested two people at the scene. Officers said they asked Christine Fasaro, 26, and Drew Munson, 34, both of Cedar Rapids, if they had witnessed the assault or had any information. Police said both Fasaro and Munson were drunk. They were taken into custody for public intoxication.
Hamblin said on Saturday that Fasaro and Munson's arrests on those charges are not related to Carey's death.
