CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Police took a 26-year-old Cedar Rapids man into custody after he threatened to kill himself and his family. The family called officers around 7:40 p.m. Friday after they escaped unharmed from a home in the 300 block of 19th Street NE.

The family told police the suspect had pointed a rifle at himself and then at them when they tried to stop him.

Officers set up a perimeter around the house to protect neighbors. They got in contact with the man and he surrendered without incident about an hour and a half after the initial call. Police took him to a nearby hospital for psychiatric evaluation.

The name of the man taken into custody has not been released.
