Car Strikes Pole Outside Mercy Hospital Parking Lot

CEDAR RAPIDS -- A vehicle crashed into a light pole while driving east on 10th street SE outside the Mercy hospital parking lot, Friday morning.
Officials responded around 8:45 a.m. to a report of a car-pole crash at 701 10th street SE. The driver was a 67-year-old female, with a 71-year-old male passenger, who both appeared conscious and alert prior to being transported to Mercy hospital with an unknown extent of injuries, officials said. After impact, the pole collapsed onto the vehicle and Alliant Energy quickly cut any power to the pole.
Police blocked off the intersection between McKinley middle school and Mercy hospital to assess the collision.
According to officials, the victims had just left Mercy hospital when the accident happened. Officials are investigating.
