Cedar Rapids Accident
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Firefighters had to pry open a car door after a minivan slammed into the side of the car Friday in northwest Cedar Rapids.
It happened around 7:30 a.m. at the corner of Johnson Avenue and Midway Drive NW, just west of Edgewood Road. Police said a car driven by Katelyn Cook, 16, of Cedar Rapids, was stopped at a stop sign, but pulled out in front of the westbound van, driven by Michelle Nemec, 34, of Cedar Rapids. The van hit the driver’s side of the car.
Airbags deployed in both vehicles, and Cook had to be extricated from the car. Both drivers were taken by ambulances to local hospitals, police said. A police officer at the scene said both of them were shaken, but appeared to be OK.
Police cited Cook for failure to yield.
The accident blocked both eastbound lanes on Johnson Avenue NW for about an hour, but motorists did not experience significant delays.
