Campers Evacuated After Flooding

  • Photo
ALLAMAKEE COUNTY, Iowa (AP) - Iowa officials evacuated more than 80 campers after heavy rains caused flooding at the Yellow River State Forest in the northeast corner of the state.

The state Department of Natural Resources said the campers had to be evacuated Saturday after more than 3 inches of rain fell overnight.

That rain, combined with the 2 inches that fell on Friday, caused flooding along the Little Paint Creek.

Officials say no one was hurt, but one woman who tried to drive out of the campgrounds herself had her vehicle swept away. The woman was able to break out her sunroof and climb to safety before her car was swept under the bridge.

The campers were brought to a community building in Harpers Ferry about 10 miles away.
