Brutal Winter Means Big Business For Some
By Mark Carlson, Iowa City Bureau Chief
IOWA CITY, Iowa - The harsh winter is leading to some big sales for some businesses.
"This is the kind of winter we love," said Dave Nerad, store manager of Active Endeavors in downtown Iowa City. The store specializes in outdoor wear and accessories. "A lot of people are coming in looking for an extra layer."
Nerad said inventory on winter jackets has been cut in half by the string of cold days. "We still have a lot of options and a lot going on clearance," he said. "But it's been a busy year."
Businesses that sell ice fishing products are also reporting a good year, according to a report from ABC News.
The wild weather has also had an impact on local hotels along Interstate 80. "We have been very busy when storms just kind of pop-up," said Dustyn Wikert, general manager of the Country Inn & Suites in Coralville.
Wikert said well forecast storms tend to turn customers away and can lead to cancellations. "It's been interesting," he said with a smile.
