CORALVILLE, Iowa - Governor Terry Branstad rallied the base Thursday night as he met with the Johnson County Republicans at the Coralville Marriott. He is in the early stages of his own re-election campaign, Branstad didn't touch on his likely Democratic opponent - State Senator Jack Hatch.

Yet he did talk up the open U.S. Senate seat as five Republicans are vying to win the nomination to face 1st District Congressman Bruce Braley.

"I think the Democrats made a big mistake to clear the field for Bruce Braley. The last thing we need is another Congressman in the United States Senate. We're tired of the gridlock," Gov. Branstad said.

As for the governor's race, a Quinnipiac poll from early March found Branstad with a 46 to 35 lead over Senator Hatch. Hatch must win the June 3rd Democratic primary to face Governor Branstad as he pursues a sixth term in office.
