SHELLSBURG, Iowa – A Brandon, Iowa, man died in a car accident Friday after driving off the road into a steep ravine.

According to the Benton County Sheriff’s Office, a volunteer fireman from Shellsburg spotted skid marks leading off the highway into a ravine at around 1:30 p.m. three miles north of Shellsburg on 32nd Ave. in Benton County.

The 34-year-old driver, whose name is pending until family is notified, was pronounced dead at the scene, the news release said.

Early investigation suggests that the driver went off the right side of the roadway as he entered a curve, then over corrected and went off the other side of the roadway into a “very steep ravine,” striking several trees, the release said.

The Shellsburg Fire Department, Shellsburg First Responders, and Center Point Ambulance responded to the scene, according to the release.

The Benton County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the accident.
