Boyfriend Charged in Central Iowa Teen's Death
DES MOINES, Iowa - A Des Moines woman's boyfriend has been charged in her death, police confirmed to KCCI on Wednesday.
Raymond Benitez, 19, of Des Moines, was charged with first-degree murder.
The U.S. Border Patrol agents stopped Benitez before he entered Mexico. Police said he was originally wanted in the case as a material witness in connection with Judy VanLo's death.
VanLo, 18, was found dead by family members in their north Des Moines home on June 17.
A friend of VanLo and a cousin have both told KCCI that Benitez had been dating VanLo.
Des Moines police detectives traveled to the Cameron County Sheriff's Department in Brownsville, Texas, on Wednesday to conduct an interview with Benitez. They said the murder charge was filed after the interview.
Police said that the preliminary medical examiner report indicates VanLo died from blunt force trauma.
Benitez is expected to be returned to Des Moines in the near future.
