Boyfriend Denies Involvement In Teen's 1974 Death

OTTUMWA, Iowa (AP) — One of two men dating a 17-year-old girl when she was murdered in an Iowa farmhouse in 1974 says he had nothing to do with her death.

Ron Nichols testified Wednesday at the first-degree murder trial of Robert "Gene" Pilcher, who's charged in the shooting death of Mary Jayne Jones.

Pilcher's defense has tried to paint Nichols as a possible suspect in Mary Jayne's death, while prosecutors worked to knock that theory down.

Nichols testified that he'd never been to the farmhouse near Ottumwa where Mary Jayne was found dead and "absolutely" wasn't involved.

Nichols says he did stop by the restaurant where Mary Jayne worked to see her at noon on April 9, 1974, around the time she disappeared, and may have missed a work appointment an hour later.
