CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - A 7-year-old boy took his mother's car for a joyride Saturday morning because he wants to move to a different house, police said.
Police Capt. Bernie Walther said the car struck two trees and a parked car, but aside from the boy's bloody lip, no one was injured in the incident.
"He has grabbed her keys before and tried to do this, but this is as far as he's ever gotten," Walther said.
According to police, the boy took the car shortly before 9 a.m. from the 2200 block of Kenrich Drive SW. He went south past Wilson Avenue SW and onto 33rd Street SW, which runs behind a busy strip mall. The boy apparently turned onto Edgewood Parkway SW, past the Carmike Wynnsong movie theater and several restaurants.
"He was bouncing between the curbs, for the most part," Walther said.
Police said the car rolled over about three blocks into the trip on an embankment between a Wendy's restaurant and a bank. A police officer who arrived on the scene got the boy out of the car.
The boy was cited for driving without a license, failure to maintain control, hit-and-run and no insurance. Walther said the citations were warranted based on the property damage involved. He said prosecutors will determine how to proceed with the case, given the boys' age.
