Boat Accident Kills 1, Injures 2

DES MOINES, Iowa - At least one person is dead and two others are injured after two boats collided on the Des Moines River.

Des Moines police said the crash happened about 7 p.m. Sunday between Sixth and Second avenues near Birdland Avenue.

Officials said crash victim Kelly Starrett later died at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

The other two injured victims were taken to Broadlawns Hospital. Their conditions have not been released.

News Channel 8's Laura Nichols said lots of debris could be seen in the water.

Witnesses said one boat cut in front of the other and that's when the two boats collided. Witnesses reported seeing people get tossed into the air.

Rescue crews said one injured man was not conscious. Paramedics said they worked to save him before he was taken to a local hospital.

Nichols said the people on the boats were related.
