CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - A Blairstown man could faces charges after leading police on a high-speed chase early Thursday morning, in and around the Cedar Hills neighborhood.

Officials were traveling westbound in the 3900 block of 16th Avenue SW around 12:30 a.m. when they saw a vehicle driven by 25-year-old Derrick J. Conway, turning westbound from Wiley Blvd SW onto 16th Avenue SW at a high rate of speed. Authorities said they initiated a traffic stop because as the vehicle was turning, it skidded from the right lane to the left lane and back. Officers said the vehicle was traveling at around 80 mph in a 45 mph zone.

Conway refused to pull over, he then turned right onto West Post Road SW, ran the stop sign at Johnson Avenue SW and the stop sign at First Avenue NW. He then turned right onto First Avenue NW, and turned left onto Meadowlark Lane NW.

Officers said Conway turned left onto Skyline Drive NW, turned left on West Post Road NW and ran the stop sign at West Post Road and Johnson Avenue SW. He continued, running the stop light at West Post Road and 16th Avenue SW before he turned right onto 16th Avenue SW and went into oncoming traffic. Officers said he was traveling around 90 mph in a 45 mph zone in the 5700 block of 16th Avenue SW.

A short time later Conway turned right onto 80th Street SW, and then stopped. Sgt. Cristy Hamblin wasn't sure why he decided to stop, but she said officials prefer it.

Authorities also added that one of the taillights on Conway's vehicle was "not working well," and he was also intoxicated. He also had two adult males in the vehicle with him, but Sgt. Hamblin said they will not be facing charges.

Conway was arrested and taken to the Linn County Jail. He could face operating while intoxicated, attempting to elude, reckless driving, improper rear lamps, improper use of lanes, failure to obey traffic control device, excessive speeds and failure to provide proof of insurance charges.
