Auditor Wants Recount of Dunkerton School Board Vote
DUNKERTON, Iowa - The Black Hawk County Auditor's office wants to recount votes cast in Tuesday's Dunkerton school board election.
The auditor's office said the director district 5 race had no candidates and was to be determined by write-in votes. The list of write-ins the precinct provided shows Elizabeth Downs winning with a slim margin over Jessica Huntley. But the auditor's office said in a news release some of the tallies are "open to interpretation."
Election Manager Kyle Jensson said Elizabeth Downs appears to have 54 votes, but other votes recorded for "Lizzy" Downs and "Liz" Downs are recorded separately. Jensson saidby law these votes should be awarded to Elizabeth Downs unless there is reason to believe they were meant for someone else. Jensson said Jessica Huntley appears to have 52 or 53 votes.
"The apparent winner may not change through this recount, but we felt that electing someone to a four-year term was important enough that we should assure the voters that the ballots were counted correctly," Jensson said.
The Auditor's Office said it will request authorization for the recount at the Board of Supervisors canvass of the election Friday. To comply with the deadline set by Iowa law, a special meeting of the Board is being set for Monday, at 9:00 a.m
