DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Voters in November elected a Republican governor, gave the GOP big legislative gains and ousted three Iowa Supreme Court justices over a gay marriage ruling.

Recognizing that remarkable outcome, Iowa members of The Associated Press voted the election the top story in 2010.

In second place was the conviction of Mark Becker of first-degree murder in the killing of Aplington-Parkersburg coach Ed Thomas in 2009.

The other Top 10 stories, were a recall of eggs from two Iowa farms; summer flooding; the Lake Delhi dam collapse; staff Sgt. Salvatore Giunta's Medal of Honor; the University of Northern Iowa's basketball upset of Kansas; the killing of two northern Iowa store clerks; a deadly stampede by horses during a July 4th parade; and sentencing of slaughterhouse executive Sholom Rubashkin to 27 years.
