Artists Unveil New Sculpture in Alliant Energy Tower

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - A Cedar Rapids artisan group worked with middle school students to design and create a sculpture for Alliant Energy. On Wednesday, the artists revealed the sculpture they made entirely from recycled energy equipment.

Tom Newport was the primary artist for the project. He and members of the Cedar River Artisans group worked on it with Roosevelt Middle School students after school. There, students learned about the sculpture process, even creating drawings and markups. Newport says as schools cut more art programs, after-school projects like this become more important.

"We've slacked off on our arts in the public schools, and this is just a small attempt to get some of that back in there part-time, or at least make it noticed," Newport said.

The sculpture is on display inside the lobby of the Alliant Energy Tower in downtown Cedar Rapids. Anyone can stop by and see it during regular business hours.
