Ankeny Man Gets Life Term after 2nd Conviction
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - A judge has sentenced an Ankeny man to life in prison after his second conviction in the killing of his ex-wife's lover.
The Des Moines Register reports Vernon Huser continued to claim his innocence Tuesday as Judge Glenn Pille sentenced him to life in prison. A Polk County jury convicted him of first-degree murder last December.
It was the second conviction of Huser in the death of Lance Morningstar. Prosecutors argued Huser paid Louis Woolheater to kill Morningstar due to anger about the affair.
After his 2010 conviction, the Iowa Court of Appeals in 2011 ordered a new trial for Huser, concluding his conviction was largely based on hearsay testimony that shouldn't have been allowed.
Woolheater was convicted of first-degree murder in 2010 and is serving a life sentence.
