DES MOINES, Iowa — An Iowa man was sentenced to 50 years in prison Wednesday in an attack on his ex-girlfriend.

Michael Stewart received the sentence in a Polk County courtroom Wednesday morning on charges of attempted murder, third-degree sexual abuse, willful injury and going armed with intent.

Ankeny police said he stabbed his ex-girlfriend, Nicole Ague, while their three children were at home in October 2011. The children found their injured mother and had a neighbor call 911 for help.

The children ranged in age from 3 to 7 years old.

Police responding to the scene followed a car fitting the description of a vehicle that had left the home. Officers said Stewart was the driver of the car and charged at them during the traffic stop and had to be subdued with a Taser gun.

Ague was taken to the hospital with multiple stab wounds, including one to the neck.

Ague is recovered from her injuries. She said her three-year-old helped her get through the pain.

"I lay down on the living room floor because I was getting dizzy and faint and couldn't walk, and Tony stayed with me and talked to me until the officers arrived," Ague said.

"He said, 'Mommy it will be OK. It will be OK.'"

Ague said her children saved her life.
