Alliant Energy Continuing to Investigate Cause of Dubuque Explosion

  • Photo
DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) A utility spokeswoman says it's still unclear what caused a small underground explosion in downtown Dubuque.

The explosion Monday afternoon caused a loud boom and lifted a manhole cover into the air.

Alliant Energy spokeswoman Heather Holmes told the Telegraph Herald a fire on a backup cable beneath the Dubuque County Jail prompted the utility to shut off power to 94 customers for more than an hour as a safety precaution.

Holmes says such incidents are uncommon and it could take a while to figure out what caused the fire.

No one was injured and Holmes says she didn't have a damage estimate.
