CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - If you've shopped at a Target recently your credit or debit account may have been compromised. Officials estimate as many as 40 million accounts were affected.
Those impacted shopped at Target stores between November 27th and Sunday, December 15th, not online.
In response to the hack, banks have started canceling credit and debit cards across the nation to protect their customers.
Barb Gaffney got a call from an official at Center Point Bank and Trust, Thursday, who said her debit card was being blocked.
"She just let me know that anyone that has a card issued to them through Center Point Bank was having the same problem. That they would have to fill out paperwork to get a new card," said Gaffney.
Gaffney said, for now, it looks like no fraudulent purchases have been made with her card, although others weren't as lucky. One customer told KCRG her information was used to make an $800 purchase at a New York Best Buy. Others said they're worried they'll suffer a similar fate.
"I am. I didn't hear anything about it. But I am real concerned," said Steve Mrkvicka, a Target Shopper.
"You hear about something like this happening quite frequently. So, I guess it's sad to say it's to be expected in some ways," said another Target shopper, Michelle Beaver.
Target officials said they've identified and resolved the issue. They're in contact with law enforcement and a forensics firm and said they'll bring those responsible to justice.
Target's CEO Gregg Steinhafel said in a statement: "Target's first priority is preserving the trust of our guests and we have moved swiftly to address this issue, so guests can shop with confidence. We regret any inconvenience this may cause."
"Well, I definitely feel like I'll spend cash there if I go back in the store," said Gaffney.
Gaffney's next step will be to her bank, to pick a way of paying that's guaranteed to not cost her any personal information.
"Basically I need to go get some cash out of my bank account, in person, and go with that until the new card comes," said Gaffney.
If you think your personal data been compromised, here are some tips. Check your credit and debit card accounts frequently for purchases, even small ones, that you didn't make. Also change your PIN and put a security freeze on your credit report.
