Accused Murderer of Former UNI Coach Pleads Not Guilty
JOPLIN, Missouri - The man accused of murdering a former University of Northern Iowa football coach entered a not guilty plea in a Missouri courtroom Thursday morning.
Jeffrey Bruner, 39, Joplin, pleaded not guilty to first degree murder and armed criminal action charges in connection with Friday night's shooting of Derek Moore outside a Joplin, Missouri movie theater.
Prosecutors said Bruner shot Moore multiple times after confronting Moore and Bruner's estranged wife outside the theater.
Moore was born in Newton and previously coached at Ellsworth Community College, Iowa Central Community College, Ames High School, Upper Iowa University, University of Northern Iowa, St. Cloud State University, Lincoln University and Western Illinois University. He was in his first year coaching at Missouri Southern State University in Joplin.
