MARION, Iowa – Marion Police are looking into the discovery of an ATM “skimmer” that was found at a local bank.

A skimmer is used to read card numbers and other account information when a card in used in an ATM.

Officers say the machine was located at the US Bank Location on 31st Street in Marion.

Police say they got to it before thieves could come back to get the skimmer or the information it captured. Because it's so unusual to see this kind of device in the area, Marion Police Sgt. Lance Miller says they're checking with other departments nationwide to see if this incident is part of a bigger crime spree.

US Bank customers who used the ATM on Monday probably already have their accounts frozen.

"Those people that have utilized that bank but not a US Bank customer I would encourage them to call their financial institution and render their cards inactive," said Sgt. Lance Miller, Marion Police.

If you have any information, you're asked to call the Marion Police Department.

Anyone who used that ATM over the Labor Day weekend should check their accounts for any fraudulent activity.
