AMES - Medical Examiners have determined the cause of death of Iowa State University student Jonathan Lacina.
The Iowa Office of State Medical Examiner reports say that he died of probable hypothermia with sharp force injuries. They have certified his manner of death an accident.
Iowa State University Police Chief Jerry Stewart says evidence indicates Lacina, 22, fell down a flight of stairs in a building on the old university dairy farm where he was found the night of April 14.
Lacina was reported missing Jan. 30, he was last seen leaving a gathering of friends Jan. 22. His disappearance prompted a campus-wide search on foot, horseback and by aircraft. Dive crews also searched a campus lake.
Stewart says Lacina was not wearing a jacket and had his shirt sleeves rolled up. He also said Lacina also suffered cuts to his hands from broken glass in a door. His wallet, keys and cell phone were found on him. Stewart says it appears Lacina walked to the building on his own but the reason wasn't known.
The Medical Examiner's Office consulted with multiple forensic experts in order to come to a final cause and manner of death because of the length of time from when Mr. Lacina was reported missing to the discovery of his body.
Tom and Alesia Lacina issued a statement about the report on Wednesday:
"We thank the State of Iowa Medical Examiner for the careful work done to determine cause and method of death. The results are consistent with the investigative work of the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation, ISU Department of Public Safety and the City of Ames Police Department indicating no foul play was involved. Our conclusion is that Jon had a tragic accident composed of falling down a dark and likely snow-covered set of steps, cutting his hands on the glass window in the door when his body or head hit it, and then drifting into unconsciousness in below 40 degree, humid weather, resulting in death from hypothermia.
"We have decided to avoid dwelling further on Jon’s untimely death so his life does not become an agent of ongoing despair. We chose to focus on the kind person Jon was during his life and how we might experience our remaining lives more deeply in his honor and fulfill those things he valued most. We encourage Jon’s friends and classmates to do the same.
"We thank all who have done more than we could have imagined to support our family through the months since Jon’s disappearance. It has been both humbling and comforting -- humbling to know so many care about us and comforting to know so many care about Jon. We also thank all who contributed so generously to the Jon Lacina Arts Fund and Reward Fund. That money will be given to the Grinnell Area Arts Council to establish a memorial supporting the arts in Jon’s name."
Memorial donations can be made to the Jon Lacina Arts Fund at the Grinnell Area Arts Council, P.O. Box 657 in Grinnell, 50112.
