DUBUQUE — A new hockey team is taking shape in Dubuque. The Dubuque Fighting Saints will start play this fall at the still being built Mystique Ice Arena. The team will play in same league as the Waterloo Black Hawks and Cedar Rapids RoughRiders. Excitement is building in the “Key City” and on Wednesday, the team held tryouts.

Fighting Saints Head Coach and former N-H-L player Jim Montegomery says players from all over the world are trying out for his team. “Obviously there are some players that we thing are going to make the team but no one is etched in the line up yet,” Montegomery says. He says aspiring hockey stars want to get their start is the brand new ice arena.

Montgomery expects the arena to be the site of serious competition with both Waterloo and Cedar Rapids. ”We were scouting at the end of last year during playoffs in Waterloo. Myself and two assistant coaches were walking with our Dubuque Fighting Saints coats and we were already getting booed.” Montegomery says those intense games will make for some great entertainment.

That’s why the team is joining forces with American Trust Bank. Owners hope a marketing partnership with the bank with help attract new fans. ”We think Mystique Ice Center and the Fighting Saints are going to have a big impact in the Dubuque area from a recreational stand point but also from an economic stand point,” says Peg Hudson with American Trust.

Neither organization will release the dollar amount exchanged in their partnership. The the goal is clear: gets fans, new and old interested in Fighting Saints hockey.

The new ice arena by mid August. The puck drops for the Saints first season October First.
