IOWA CITY - Earlier this week we told you about an Iowa City woman who lost her service dog. Since then, dozens of people have called in and others sent e-mail from around the world offering to help. Shirley Chong is missing her Belgian Tervuren. He slipped his collar and leash last Friday. Since our report aired Tuesday, recovery efforts have formed in the United State, Canada and England. Chong said, “All I do is answer people's questions about dogs and they turn around and do all this stuff. I am amazed."
The dog's name is Hunter. He has been spotted on the east side of Iowa City. People living near the train tracks might want to keep an eye out for hunter. Chong’s friends have hired a pet detective from Wyoming to search for Hunter.
Zoe, the tracker dog, once found a lost dog in four hours. So, Zoe and her owner, Cathy Orde are confident they can find Hunter, the missing service dog, too. And the first break in the case came at a home. The homeowner said, “I saw him in my backyard."
A quick search of the yard and Zoe picked up Hunter's scent. Zoe lead Orde up to the train tracks in eastern Iowa City. Orde has been seeking out missing animals for more than a year. She has been involved in search and rescue for 10 years ever since her husband went missing in the mountains in Wyoming. Orde said, “I know what it's like to be on the other end, to know what it's like to have a love one lost, a pet lost."
Orde found her husband in 29 hours. And in the mid-afternoon, it seemed Zoe might have found hunter. She could not get into the brush fast enough. But the service dog was not there, so the detectives continued the search along the railway.
But Orde believes the key to finding Hunter is back at the neighbor's yard. She changed her plan to bring a trap to the yard and hope hunter comes back a third time.
