Search is on for Missing Service Dog

IOWA CITY - An Iowa City woman who depends on her dog for survival is now turning to her friends to find the dog. The service dog ran away and hasn't been found in four days.

Any pet lover will say it's very hard when their animal runs away. But it's even harder when that pet is your life line.

"He's woken me up when I'm hypoglycemic probably 15 to 20 times," said M. Shirley Chong.

Hunter, a Belgian Tervuren, is Shirley Chong's service dog. She's trained him for nine years. Hunter helps her get around in life. But when Chong was in eye surgery last week, the unthinkable happened.

"My parents took him out to exercise him and as they were coming back in he slipped his collar and took off," said Chong.

A police officer last saw Hunter Sunday night near this wooded area. This is more than a mile from where he ran off. And no one has seen his since.

"I'm still hoping he'll be found," said Chong.

But Chong can't help. She says she's barely mobile under the best circumstances. Now she has the added problem of recovering from eye surgery. So she's depending on her friends. They're putting up signs across Iowa City. Chong is offering a reward. And hoping someone sees the sign, spots hunter, and reunites the two.

"I can't stop looking until I know," said Chong.

Some of Chong's friends from all over the United States and the world are trying to help. They are working to bring a pet detective into Iowa City.
