IOWA CITY - Top Hawkeye receiver Dominique Douglas, 19, and sophomore wide receiver Anthony Bowman, 19, were arrested on Sunday for making purchases with stolen credit cards last May. Both players are suspended indefinitely from participation in all team activities.
The Hawks had high hopes for Douglas, an expected starter who lead the nation last season in receptions by a freshman with 49.
A criminal complaint filed in Johnson County District Court alleges the pair attempted to make purchases at C&E Fashions, Sneakerhead and Hatworld using stolen credit cards, presumably online. The stolen credit cards belonged to two separate victims, neither of which had any known association with the players.
The players attempted to charge over $2000 in merchandise, the criminal complaint does not specify if they ever received the goods. The events allegedly took place on campus, at Phillips Hall and at the Gerdin Athletic Learning Center.
Iowa Head Football Coach Kirk Ferentz made the following statement: “I am aware of the accusations that have been made against two members of the football program. Both student-athletes have been suspended indefinitely from participation in all team activities.
“The accusations are serious and, if proven to be true, are extremely disappointing for everyone associated with the University of Iowa and our football program. As always, we will work with the appropriate individuals and entities on and off campus as this matter works its way through the legal system.
“As is often the case in matters of this nature, I am aware of inconsistencies in what may or may not have taken place. We need to let the legal process run its course.” Ferentz will not comment further, at this time, on the matter.
Rumors of what this will mean for the team and the upcoming season are flying on Hawkeye fan websites, as well as around classrooms, offices and restaurants.
"That's not a good situation, lose a starter 12 days before first game. It depends if the coach has good backup. If he does it doesn't matter. I hope he does," said Cary Verbeek, Hawkeye fan.
"I trust the athletic department will handle it correctly and do the appropriate thing," said Mark Phillips, Hawkeye fan.
Fan chatter on web sites claimed the victims were students on the same dorm floor where the athletes lived. University police didn't confirm that.
Anthony Bowman played sparingly in his first year. Both Douglas and Bowman are sophomores and both are originally from Detroit.
