Shooting at Tama County Motel

By Nick Weig

TOLEDO - Police in Toledo are investigating an early Thursday morning shooting and attempted robbery.

It happened around 3:15 a.m. at the Designer Inn on Highway 30 in Toledo.

Police say a man walked in and demanded money. He then shot a clerk in the leg.

Hospital officials say the clerk, Dennis Armstrong, 23, is in fair condition. But the incident has struck some nerves.

"We haven't had an armed robbery in town as long as I've been here. We're a small town. It just doesn't happen around here," said Toledo Police Chief, Jeff Harnish.

Police say they're looking for a man driving a black truck. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is helping with the case.
