Special Summer Camp Attracts Kids with Blood Disorders

By Erin Leach

MOUNT VERNON - Sure, any kid can go to summer camp, but one camp in Mount Vernon is a little more selective.

The children at “Family Camp” have bleeding disorders, meaning their blood doesn't clot like it should and they bleed longer than most people.

For the second year now, “Family Camp” at Camp Tanager, is giving families that are affected by these disorders a get-away.

Not only is it a place where children can play with others who have to be just as careful but it's also a place where parents can go for a little bit of understanding.

Kari Atkinson is the president of “Hemophilia of Iowa” and also cares for a young child who has a blood disorder. She says, "People will say, ‘I understand what you're going through’ but in reality, they really have no idea. What's nice is, you talk to a parent and you tell them what you're going through and they can say ‘I truly understand.’"

“Family Camp” is meant for children ages three to five and their families.
