DUBUQUE (AP) - An Iowa man charged with mailing pipe bombs and threatening letters to investment firms and others remains in federal custody.

John Tomkins, nicknamed "The Bishop Bomber," was arrested on his way to work in Dubuque in April.

He's charged with one count of mailing a threatening communication with intent to extort and one count of possession of an unregistered explosive device.

Tomkins is accused of sending two disconnected pipe bombs and threatening letters to investment companies in an attempt to scare them into forcing up stock prices.

After his arrest, a federal judge in Chicago ordered him held in federal custody pending a further court order or a trial.

Randall Samborn of the U.S. attorney's office in Chicago says there's nothing new to report this week.
