CEDAR FALLS - The Iowa Board of Regents wants Iowa's state universities to stop using taxpayer dollars for their athletic departments.

The Board would give Iowa State and the University of Northern Iowa until September to put together a plan to reduce or eliminate taxpayer support.

The University of Iowa stopped using tax money for athletics during the 2007-2008 school year.

UNI's athletic director says his department can't exist without "an institution subsidy." ISU's athletic director declined to comment.
