State Legislature Reaches Deal in Texting Ban Debate

DES MOINES - Iowa lawmakers have reached a compromise deal on a texting ban for drivers, but it comes with twist.

The new bill would mean no one can text while driving. It would also ban drivers under age 18 from using a cell phone, talking or texting. But here's the kicker, police can not stop someone solely on suspicion of texting.

Enforcement would not start for a year while the state launches a public awareness campaign. Legislative leaders say the compromise bill should win quick approval.
