Iowa College Campuses See Increase in Alcohol Arrests

DES MOINES (AP) — A report from the state Board of Regents has found that Iowa State University recorded more than double the number of public intoxication arrests in 2009 than the school had in 2008.

Iowa State University had 304 arrests in 2009 and 134 arrests in 2008. The school's police director Jerry Stewart says the 2009 arrest tally marks a seven-year high. Stewart attributes the rise to several factors, including more students living in dormitories and an increased number of officers to make arrests.

The University of Northern Iowa also saw an increase in public intoxication arrests, reporting 83 in 2009 compared with 66 in 2008. The University of Iowa's 462 public intoxication arrests in 2009 showed an 11 percent increase from the year before.
