DUBUQUE - This morning's fog was to blame for canceling school in Dubuque today. The superintendent says the thick fog made it too hard for bus drivers to see the road.
That decision didn't sit well with parents after the fog lifted. For these children, playing in Valentine Park on a bright and sunny afternoon... is all sorts of fun. But knowing they'll have to make this day up in June, casts a dark cloud on their day.
"Well I think we could have gone today. Look how nice it is out. I mean it was just this morning, but I am kind of glad we got off too," said student Naomi Brehm.
But the emotions weren't so mixed for some parents. Superintendent Larie Godinez says she took several calls from parents complaining about the cancellation.
"I think they probably could have gone with the three hour delay and would have been just fine," said parent Lori Massey.
After school bus drivers said they could barely see the road early this morning, Godinez delayed classes for two hours. She later added a third hour. When the fog didn't lift, she finally called off school.
It was clear and sunny in Dubuque this afternoon, but administrators say it's the conditions in the county that cause them to cancel school.
"I also wasn't out in the county so I really can't speak for all the children that they have to get from the county."
Either way, these kids found a way to enjoy the day off. But you can guess this is where they'd rather be come June.
The last time school in Dubuque was cancelled due to fog was on February 11th, 1998.
