CEDAR RAPIDS — Alliant Energy customers will see higher energy bills this month.

Alliant is asking state regulators for a nearly 14-percent rate hike. That will generate an extra $163 million to pay for a new wind farm and upgrades to its transmission grid to handle renewable power. Alliant says that will lead to more reliable service.

The interim rate hike takes effect March 20th. That will cost the average homeowner an $10 per month.

In January, Alliant received final approval for a seven-percent rate hike to pay for flood and storm damages.
